During the reporting period we expanded our efforts with workforce development programs and services, and provided more intensive individual support post-graduation. This additional guidance was key to the success of the disconnected youth.  When a participant was identified at the appropriate stage of readiness, the rate of success increased.  Often it was a challenge to reach those who were deemed disconnected youth and then the timing of the class might not be ideal.  Over the 20 weeks of class, the relationships built among the participants and facilitators are important. Development of a future story is also pivotal to success. Having a future story demonstrates confidence and motivation to get ahead.

In May we initiated a monthly Getting Ahead Graduate gathering to discuss barriers identified by the graduates and to increase social capital through networking. 32 people have participated in first two months. The feedback has been very positive to date.

Continued efforts with community partners to address the social determinants and to build resources, including a child care workforce pilot and transportation education are important and seem to be effective.

Through reflection and evaluation during this year, the Bridges Steering Committee acknowledged that we need to expand our efforts to institutions and the community. Since institutions and communities deal with limited resources in much the same way as individuals, the Steering Committee began with creating a mental model of our current community and then created a future story. Focusing more on problem solving, linking with existing institutions, and engaging resource partners with the graduates are important elements.
