Story Behind the Curve
- We now offer two afterschool programs on gardening and nutrition, separating cooking into its own class because of its popularity.
- We model healthy eating each day -- even when the classes focus on art, science, or sports -- by providing healthy snacks and dinners.
- We include gardening and nutrition during our half-day programs offered to families on some of the days when Talbot County Public School students only have a half-day of school instruction.
Partners
- University of Maryland Extension’s FSNE program - regularly visits the school and presents a lesson from the Growing Healthy Habits curriculum to our students.
- Phillips Wharf Environmental Center - community garden
- Master Gardeners Phyllis Thibodeau and Linda Scoggins
- Sharon Morrison with UMD’s community gardens program
What Works
- Fun cooking class -- Our Master Mixers cooking class teaches the kids how to create fun and tasty foods that are healthy and can be recreated at home.
- Take-home baskets -- The kids particularly enjoyed preparing take-home food baskets once a month that contain all the ingredients and a recipe for them to make a healthy meal at home with their family.
- Enthusiastic instructors - We've found the kids to be particularly open when we have enthusiastic instructors leading the way.
- Field trips - Visiting local farms allows the kids to see the larger picture of healthy food production.
- Expanded resources - Additional training for our leaders allowed us to be more creative in the way we reach the students
