Story Behind the Curve
Coordinating the exact client release date continues to be challenging as date is often not known by Reentry Case Manager due to delayed communication from the parole board to classification officer. Dialogue effort is still at hand to improve this gap in inmate’s transition back into the community.
During intervention with reentry Case manager the Clients are instructed to contact Case Manager right after their release. This often is not followed through by the client; therefore Reentry Case Manager must remain the initiator of the outreach efforts and monitoring. Another noted dynamic is inmates who have been released do not appear to feel comfortable to meet on the grounds of the detention center at Case Manager’s office. To ensure continuity of service for successful community integration, reentry Case Manager offers to meet with clients in the community, often local library, or at SMCN program site.
Upon release into the community a hindering factor for the client is often limited access to transportation. Transportation continues to present as one of the biggest barriers for Inmates being released to access services, keep appointments and follow up. Reentry Case manager makes all efforts, prior to release, to explore clients’ natural supports and community resources to ensure they get some sort of assistance for this need- outcome is not always successful. The use of the resource guide is instrumental during search for services that can aide with transportation supports.
Lastly, Spatial assignments. Space at the detention center is becoming more challenging due to the increase number of providers coming into the detention center and needing to share limited interviewing rooms. Reentry Case Manager is proactive with securing a schedule for when space is available to see inmates. This requires some coordination effort as not all rooms available offer privacy for assessment and interviewing.
