Hunger is caused by poverty; poverty is caused by a lack of job skill or access to jobs due to transportation or other obstacles. We are addressing the need for job training and the need for a professionally trained hospitality worker in the region. The hospitality industry is the number two employers in the United States next to the Government. As a region we are seeking to increase our tourism, which is a beautiful thing, people come to spend their money and go home. Helping us to build our economy, which creates more job opportunities for our citizens. This program teaches a job skill in culinary arts that will make the participant employable. We have been mixing in lessons on soft skills as well as the culinary skills. Teaching the students the importance of being ready to go when you get to work, being timely, productive and communicating. Each week something new is added in soft skills. Social Services assisted in mock interviewing of the students. We have modified the curriculum and the time and length of the program. This population was hard to keep focused at times, and attendance could have been better. We feel an eight-week program versus a 12-week will be more appealing and doable for the client. Transportation is always an issue. This will make recruiting easier. We are scheduling a meeting with the court system to make this training program and alternative to juvenile sentencing. This will give us the opportunity to change the paths of some the young offenders.
