Story Behind the Curve
Although The LAYC after school program met their FY18 target; prior years (FY16 & FY17) faced some difficulties in reaching their target number for the “better off” measure. They were competing with after school activities such as sports. Since the second half of the school year falls in the warmer months student enrollment in the after school program declined.
However to combat this in FY18 LAYC was able to work out an agreement to allow participants an hour (1 hour) of enrichment to participate in sports and then return to their original program. In addition, the program has partnered with the University of Maryland’s nutrition department. Activities consisted of “Nutrition Jeopardy” where the youth were debunking myths about food, how to save money when shopping for food, and best practices when choosing and cooking meals.
