Story Behind the Curve
Community Services Foundation
CSF always surpasses their target number for each performance measure, as a large program functioning in several areas within the county they are able to serve a large amount of youth. CSF is also going to offer nutrition classes for their after school participants as well as cooking classes.
In FY19 the recruitment strategies were discussed at the Queenstown location, and the recruitment strategies are implemented across all eight sites. CSF recruits by reviewing enrollment demographics within their respective communities monthly, from here they are sure that every parent/family is aware of the services they provide for youth and teens
Why Is This Important?
Strategic Goal Population: There are 132,000 students enrolled in 208 Prince George’s County Public Schools and of those students 63.8% receive free and reduced meals. According to the Prince George's County Food Systems Profile by Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, 43.6% of the population lives in a food desert, which is much higher than the 27.3% of Maryland’s total population that lives in a food desert. Programs will target children ages 4-18 and their families who receive and/or are eligible for Free and Reduced Meals (FARM) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Program Summary
The Community Services Foundation’s (CSF) mission is to enhance the lives of individuals by providing structured services, activities, and programs. In support of its mission, CSF has established the following goals: assist residents in the development and pursuit of their special interests, conduct community-based activities that enrich the quality of life of all participants, encourage participants in wholesome activities, inform residents of worthwhile services available to them, and promote community empowerment while engaging in activities that stimulate self-industry and creative development.
This program includes a summer and after school component,
operating 3 hours a day, 3-5 days per week.
Target Population
These after school programs serve school aged children/youth who are residing in Section 8 or low income housing and/or are on free and reduced lunch. The communities are Capitol Heights, Forest Heights, Seat Pleasant, Mount Rainier and Landover, all of which have significant amounts of single parent households, unemployment, high crime and thus presenting environments where children/youth are at substantial risk for delinquency and criminal activity.
