Parenting While Incarcerated Annual FY17

Program Summary

Kent Family Center implemented the program "Parenting While Incarcerated" with incarcerated mothers at the Kent County Detention Center.  The program provided a parenting curriculum, resource connections, and release planning to female inmates.  The Parenting Education component covered child development and attitudes and confidence about parenting.

During sessions, women engaged in lessons on child development, parent-child activities designed to promote bonding and attachment, and referrals to needed community resources during and after their release. The Kent County Detention Center held quarterly family night events where children could visit mothers in the multi purpose room.

The program did not extend to FY18 due to limitations in being able to implement the curriculum during the short stays of the female inmates. The Detention Center continues the family nights and is offering greater pre-release support. The program also created a Re-Entry Directory for parents to help connect them to relevant resources.

Target Population

Families impacted by incarceration, specifically mothers serving time at the Kent County Detention Center.
