BowieYSB – Bowie Disconnected Youth meet the following targets by the end of the FY 19:
PM: Number/Percent of youth who participated in the Job Fair
PM: Number/Percent of youth who completed the Life kills Workshops
PM: Number/Percent of youth who are connected with school or work at the conclusion of services
PM: Number/Percent of youth who connected with a potential employer or educational opportunity as a result of the Job Fair Event.
The provider provided services to youth participating in the GED Program and Life Skills Workshops. Although reports from scorecard shows that 68% of youth who are connected with school or work at the conclusion of program and 78% of Job Fair participants who connected with a potential employer or educational opportunity as result of event, according to provider, % of youth who were connected with school or work at the conclusion of services were 173/178 in which makes about 97% completion rate. In terms of % of youth who were connected with potential employer or educational opportunity as a result of the Job Fair event, provider states that that 247/257 youth were connected in which makes up to a 96%.
Program Summary
Bowie Youth Service Bureau Disconnected Youth Program reconnects youth who are habitually truant and no longer attending school or alternative academic programs. Once the youth are reconnected, youth participate in supportive group activities to learn skills to manage schoolwork, handle challenges on the job, home, and the community, as well as connect them to support networks.
Youth also participate in Life Skills Workshops focused on money management and budgeting. Disconnected youth learn how to prepare a budget, open a bank account and recognize the importance of savings, percentages and interest rates, and the difference between a credit and debit card. Participants will have the knowledge to and differentiate between want and need in making appropriate purchase decisions. Disconnected youth will be assessed using a pre- and post-test to measure knowledge of skills.
Disconnected Youth will attend an Annual Job Fair, to be connected with employment and vocational training opportunities. In addition to the Job Fair, on-site resume-writing services and interview skills training will be provided.
Target Population
Bowie Youth Service Bureau Disconnected Youth targets disconnected youth who are not attending school through Pupil Personnel Workers and other contacts at area schools, as well as through the Interagency Attendance Council, Juvenile Court, the Department of Juvenile Services, the Department of Social Services and other agencies. Disconnected Youth in Bowie are largely referred through the Tall Oaks Academy where 95% of youth do not complete school. This area has the largest population of disconnected youth in Bowie.
