In the 2018 Community Health Needs Assessment Drug Use and Abuse was identified as the second highest priority based on survey results, primary and secondary data, and focus group input. Drugs impact people of all ages through primary use which affects the brain, behaviors, relationships and functioning, housing access, and more to an individual. Even if in recovery, remaining effects of usage may remain that impact ability to find housing, a job, or to find positive community support systems. Secondary impacts include negative impacts on children and families, job/work loss, incarceration rates, health care costs and more (all of which affect taxes which are needed to raise funds to support programs that mitigate effects).
What We Do
The Becker County Diversion Program is designed to provide an early response to individuals with acute or chronic mental or chemical health problems who have become involved with law enforcement and are not a risk to the community. The program will encourage healthy choices, reduce jail admissions and reduce future costs and consequences.
Who We Serve
People who have been identified as having unmet chemical dependency or mental health needs that are not a danger to society and are engaged in teh criminal justice system.
How We Impact
People will recieve the services they need to improve health and wellbeing while reducing the cost of care and unnecessary jail admissions.

What We Do
The FATHER Project assists father in overcoming barriers that prevent them from supporting their children economically and emotionally. Hubbard County fathers and families recieve 1:1 support in their home and within a group setting. Services include: personal consultation with a father advocate, peer support services, empowerment supports, parenting and fatherhood skills classes, resource navigation, child support services, father and family activities, Adult Basic Education and GED services, and employment services.

All men over 18 years old who are fathers or are interested in services to become prepared to be fathers, that are located in Hubbard and Becker Counties.

Medication Assisted Treatment supports the use of suboxone in helping women and men recieve treatment to stay in recovery from opioid use disorder. It is a service that is provided by a trained physician or advanced practitioner. New partnerships have brought education to providers at Essentia Health to become certified in MAT. A second training will be held in the winter of 2019 and will provide the opportunity for providers from other agencies to recieved the MAT waiver certification as well.

The new MAT program will be implemented at Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes in January 2020. The program is open to all men and women over the age of 18 years old willing to be treated at Essentia Health and will be monitored by the provider.
How We Impact
Opioids are one of the leading causes of death for young people in America today. MAT programs provide a safe and controlled level of medication to overcome the use of an abused opioid. When provided at the proper dose, medications used in MAT have no adverse effects on a person's intelligence, mental capability, physical functioning or employability. In fact, the treatment supports people to stay in recovery and prevents premature death by overdose.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and social emotional learning skills are the top factors that influence health outcomes and prosperity across the lifespan. In fact, if a child is exposed to 6 or more ACES, their life expectency is 20 years less than a child with zero. Healthy environments provide the context in which people thrive and nurturing environments create access to experiences that enable youth to aquire skills to thrive in society. In order to support youth in becoming resilient and having access to resources to support wellbeing, our approach is to create healthy environments and positive nurturing environments that empower youth to create solutions with leaders.

Multiple organizations partner together to reduce the stigma of mental health and substance use disorder in Becker County. Over the years the partnerships have grown to not only provide professional education, but to provide community education and to lift the voice of personal stories of those who have experienced the hardship first hand. Stomp the Stigma and the "Inside Out": A Step Inside Mental Illness" video series are two such examples. Our goal is to continue to grow and offer impactful trainings and opportunities so that people feel empowered to seek help, and supported in recovery.

How We Impact
Did you know that nearly 60% of adults and 50% of youth ages 8-15 with a mental illness did not recieve mental health services the previous year? Our goal is to increase the number of people recieving education, to reduce the stigma, and to improve access to mental health services as part of the work of the overall HOPE Project.
Why Is This Important?
Barriers for child care providers include burnout, lack of benefits, state regulations, poor income for child care providers, difficult families and children. Parents struggle to find affordable child care, quality child care, or care that works for their hours of employment. Employers struggle to support employees who have child care issues.

With 647 child care slots needed now this program focuses on identifying opportunities to expand current facilities to serve more children, or to develop new child care facilities. Using an asset based approach the team has identified agencies that have potential and interest in expansion or creation of a facility.

Creating or expanding facilities directly reduces the number of child care slots in need.
What We Do
A survey completed in 2018 shows that child care providers in Becker County feel unsupported in many ways. The goal of this initiative is to support child care providers in tangible ways to address some of the concerns that were expressed including access to funding, business training, and accessbile annual training for licensure.

This initiative is supported through collaboration and the primary focus is supporting all licensed child care providers in Becker County.

Provide a child care business cohort to support training needs of child care providers, improve business skills and networking amongst child care providers.
