What We Do

Tuberculosis is a potentially fatal disease that is transmissible through the air, yet is treatable and curable. The Public Health Laboratory (PHL) provides timely, high quality laboratory testing for the isolation and identification of Mycobacteria species, including the causative agent of tuberculosis. Drug susceptibility testing on positive isolates is also performed to insure that patients receive the proper drug therapy. Prompt screening of submitted clinical specimens for tuberculosis is critical to rule-in affected patients, begin treatment, and prevent the further transmission of this communicable disease.

Who We Serve

Public Health Laboratory testing services provided to Connecticut clients supports the DPH Tuberculosis Control Program, which in turn coordinates surveillance and case management through healthcare providers and local health departments, with emphasis on sections of the community considered to be underserved.

How We Impact

Providing timely, accurate tuberculosis test results helps assure that identified individuals are managed to a positive clinical outcome. This protects other people from exposure to this communicable disease and helps assure healthy communities.
