Iowa Communities Free from Child Abuse

United Way of North Central Iowa is investing in creating safer communities for our children by decreasing the rates of child abuse and re-abuse. The Communities Free From Child Abuse scorecard provides a breakdown of child abuse rates throughout the state from United Way services areas down to individual counties. Furthermore, these scorecards include community strategies and partners that are contributing to turning the curve in each of our communities. Why Is This Important?
  • In North Central Iowa, four of the nine counties served by United Way of North Central Iowa (Wright (2), Floyd (14), Franklin (18), and Cerro Gordo (19)) ranked in the top 20 for highest rates of child abuse in Iowa with a total of 498 abuse cases in 2013. (Prevent Child Abuse-IA, 2013)
  • Long-term effects of child abuse include increased risk of teen pregnancy, central nervous system damage, mental and emotional disturbances, low self-esteem, and aggressive tendencies (Chalk, Gibbons, and Scarupa, 2002; Kelley, Thornberry, and Smith, 1997).
  • According to Prevent Child Abuse – Iowa, over half of child abuse victims in 2013 were under the age of six years old.
  • One in five Iowa adults experienced three or more ACE’s (adverse childhood experiences) signifying that these childhood experiences rarely occur in isolation. (Iowa ACEs, 2012)
  • Individual’s with fewer ACE’s and delay the initiation of substances or abstain tend to be more engaged in school, experience greater academic success, and make healthier choices in adult life.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), states and local agencies across the country receive over three million referrals of child abuse each year which is approximately six referrals every minute. (DHHS, 2011)1
